Well, I have to admit a lot of it was a mystery but here are some information that you might find useful.

Kind of went into the mysteries of pet melding too on the first interview. It's possible that your pet mutate into a type that isn't either of the two you meld and change appearance completely. Possible to change into a mob that isn't actually available to catch too. I'll definitely be melding quite a few pets in OB. It's funny how they referred to Pokemon too. :3 Gotta catch em all?

Oh, good. I was reading about pet melding in-game and it sounded really, really weird.

Yeah same. I had no idea if it actually had any real benefit but... I'd like to see that mutation happening and get a pet that's isn't obtainable by capturing. :3

I did but... once you meld pets the melded pet goes down to Lv1. I'll do some when OB starts.

At least with your level, the EXP the pet gets is really good. Shouldn't take very long to get it back to 30.

Yeah, and on top of that after you meld.. the exp they receive is higher so they level much faster than the first time around. A few events and/or quests and it'll be back up to 30.

OB I'll definitely put more time into getting different pets to benefit different situations.
