If you want to improve, i'm going to be honest with you. It seems you are familiar with some basic skills like gradients and layers, but you have ALOT to work on.
First off, never use brushes or fonts that automatically come with the program. They are ugly and you can't do much with them. Go to deviantart.com and search brushes for brushes, and a good website for fonts is dafont.com. Then go to Computer> Gimp 2.6> brushes and place the brushes you downloaded in that folder, and Computer> Gimp 2.6> fonts and place the fonts you downloaded in that folder. Once you start up gimp, they will be available for you to use however you please!
A good way to get better is to search GIMP Sig Tutorials in Google Images, and find a good beginner tutorial to start off with. Don't expect to be able to create more detailed sigs just yet, though.
Try to pick up techniques from tutorials like smudging and more advanced layering, and you'll be creating you're own creative sigs in no time! And one more tip; when you save your creation, click the little plus under the box where you put the name for your project, scroll down, and click "PNG". Huge improvment in qaulity. Get better and have fun!
